Home Safety Warning: Avoid Faulty Switches to Make Your Home Safe

Cracked general power outlet with a plug inserted, the crack circled in red

Every kitchen, bedroom, living room, laundry and bathroom has general power outlets (GPOs) we use every day. We’re so used to them that we forget every GPO has the potential to cause an electric shock resulting in severe injury, burns or even death.

One of the most common faults we find is a cracked GPO or loose switch. Most people think “well, it still works” — but it’s a sign of a bigger problem.

What are the problems?

  1. Problem 1: Cracked behind the switch

Usually from screws being done up too tight. This exposes terminals, which can short circuit or create faults with appliances when plugged in.

  2. Problem 2: Hot spots

Broken terminals or switches create a hot spot behind the outlet, melting cabling and plastic — a fire hazard.

  3. Problem 3: Arcing

Cracked terminals will most likely cause electrical arcing, often seen as small flashes of light from the switch or plug. This can cause an electric shock or a fire.

What to do

  1. Stop using the switch or outlet, and stop others from using it.
  2. Call an electrician to replace it as soon as possible.
  3. Have your electrician check all your other switches and outlets — when one has this problem, others often aren’t far behind.
